Brussels sprouts have undergone a remarkable culinary transformation in recent years, shedding their old reputation for bitterness and blandness. They’ve emerged as a versatile and beloved vegetable, and for good reason! Packed with nutrients and capable of absorbing incredible flavors, these miniature cabbages are a chef’s delight. As someone who has embraced the delicious potential of Brussels sprouts throughout my life, I’m always on the lookout for innovative ways to bring them to the table. This particular recipe for Sweet Chili Orange Glazed Brussels Sprouts is a revelation, offering a dynamic flavor profile that stands out from more traditional preparations.

Unlike many roasted Brussels sprouts recipes you might find, this method utilizes the stovetop, allowing for a quicker cook time and a more controlled caramelization, resulting in perfectly tender-crisp sprouts every time. It’s a delightful alternative to my popular Maple Bacon Gochujang Brussels Sprouts or my Sriracha Sweet Chili Roasted Brussels Sprouts, bringing a fresh, pan-seared approach to a beloved vegetable. The stovetop cooking also helps in creating a thick, syrupy glaze that clings beautifully to each sprout, ensuring every bite is bursting with flavor.

How to Master Sweet Chili Orange Glazed Brussels Sprouts

Creating these sensational Brussels sprouts is simpler than you might imagine, requiring just a few key steps and fresh ingredients. The magic happens quickly on the stovetop, transforming humble sprouts into a gourmet side dish.

Selecting and Preparing Your Brussels Sprouts

  • Begin with approximately 2 pounds of fresh Brussels sprouts. Opt for small to medium-sized sprouts, as they tend to be more tender and cook more evenly.
  • Thoroughly trim the tough ends and remove any discolored outer leaves.
  • Halve each Brussels sprout lengthwise. This maximizes the surface area for caramelization and ensures the glaze can fully coat them.
  • Wash the halved sprouts in a colander and pat them dry. Excess moisture can prevent proper browning.

Sautéing to Golden Perfection

  • Heat a generous amount of canola oil in a large nonstick skillet or sauté pan over medium-high heat. The nonstick surface is crucial here, as it helps prevent the delicious glaze from sticking and burning, ensuring every drop adheres to your sprouts.
  • Once the oil is shimmering, add the halved Brussels sprouts to the pan. Spread them out in a single layer as much as possible for even cooking.
  • Cook the sprouts, shaking the pan occasionally and stirring frequently, until they begin to brown and develop a beautiful golden color and a slightly charred exterior. This caramelization is key to their irresistible flavor and tender-crisp texture. This usually takes about 4-5 minutes.

Crafting the Zesty Glaze

  • Once the sprouts are nicely browned, it’s time to build the incredible glaze. Add the fresh orange juice, soy sauce, minced ginger, and minced garlic to the pan. The aromas will immediately begin to fill your kitchen!
  • Bring the liquid to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low.
  • Partially cover the pan and let it simmer, allowing the sprouts to tenderize and the sauce to reduce and thicken into a glorious, sticky glaze. This process takes another 4-5 minutes, with the last 2 minutes ideally covered to steam the sprouts slightly for perfect tenderness.

The Finishing Touches

  • Once the glaze has thickened, drizzle the sweet chili sauce and a hint of honey over the sprouts. Stir gently to ensure every sprout is thoroughly coated in this irresistible sticky, zesty mixture. The sweet chili sauce adds a wonderful depth of flavor and a touch of heat, while the honey contributes to the perfect sticky consistency.
